What Blum Hardware Actually Costs in a NSW Kitchen

Blum hardware cost Australia: LEGRABOX drawers start around $233 including GST and soft-close hinges about $14. A NSW joiner prices the real upgrade.

Blum hardware cost in Australia starts with small parts and adds up quickly: a published Blum LEGRABOX drawer kit starts at about $233 including GST, while a standard soft-close hinge starts near about $14 including GST. In a NSW kitchen, that can mean the difference between a modest hinge-and-shelf fitout and several thousand dollars of deep drawers, lift doors and pull-outs. The useful question is not whether Blum is good. It is which moving parts deserve the spend.

The short answer

Blum is a premium hardware choice, but “Blum hardware” is not one line item. It is hinges, drawers, lift systems, runners, internal organisers and sometimes motion technology. A kitchen with twenty doors and four drawers can use the brand without becoming a high-end hardware package. A kitchen with eight deep drawers, a bin pull-out, a pantry pull-out and two overhead lifts is another thing entirely.

ComponentIndicative published starting price, including GSTWhat that price does not automatically include
LEGRABOX drawer kitFrom $233Front, cabinet, machining, fitting and configuration
110-degree soft-close hingeFrom $14Door, cup drilling and installation labour
Half-overlay soft-close hingeFrom $16Door and installation labour
Wide-angle soft-close hingeFrom $37Special door geometry and installation labour

Those are August 2026 retail starting points, not a quote and not a promise that every size is available at that price. Hardware is also only one share of a kitchen. Cabinetry commonly represents about 35–45% of a kitchen renovation budget, and an Australian kitchen renovation benchmark is about $42,630. That is why comparing a $14 hinge with a $42,000 renovation can be misleading: the hinge is cheap; designing enough access to make the room work is not.

The Blum range a joiner actually specifies

In the workshop, hardware starts with the opening action. A hinged door gives clear access to a shallow cupboard. A drawer gives access from above and keeps heavy pans from disappearing at the back. A lift door keeps an overhead door out of the cook’s face. The brand matters after that decision has been made.

Clip Top BLUMOTION hinges are the familiar quiet-close solution for hinged doors. They come in different overlays and opening angles because not every door sits in the same relationship to the carcass. A 155-degree hinge costs more than a basic 110-degree option because it solves a different clearance problem. That is a specification issue, not a showroom upgrade.

TANDEMBOX and LEGRABOX are metal-sided drawer families. LEGRABOX has a more refined slim side and more visible finish options, which matters on open drawers in a pared-back kitchen. The runner and drawer geometry need to match the cabinet width, depth, load and front height. We do not treat an organiser as an afterthought either: cutlery, plate and utensil systems must be selected while the drawer is designed, not forced in after the cabinetry is fitted.

AVENTOS is the lift-system family for overhead doors. It is useful above a coffee station, appliance garage or fridge where a conventional hinged door would sit in the way. It is not automatically better on every overhead cabinet. A simple hinged door often costs less, is easy to adjust and is entirely adequate for a low-use cupboard.

Drawer systems, priced

A drawer quote should tell you how many drawer boxes, not merely say “soft-close drawers”. A full-depth pot drawer uses more material, runner capacity and cabinet work than a shallow cutlery drawer. Add an internal drawer behind a tall front and you gain clean lines but also another drawer box, another front and more fitting time.

Drawer decisionCost effectWhy it changes the result
One LEGRABOX drawer kitFrom $233 including GSTPremium drawer box is only one component of an installed drawer
Replace shelves with deep drawersHigher hardware and fabrication allowanceBetter access to pans, plates and small appliances
Add inner drawersHigher allowance per openingHides storage behind a clean tall front
Use wide, heavily loaded drawersHigher allowanceRequires the right runner and stable cabinet construction
Keep a simple shelf cupboardLowest hardware allowanceWorks where contents are light and rarely accessed

This is where people waste money: specifying a premium drawer in a cabinet that could have been a simple shelf, then leaving the pot cupboard on shelves. Spend first on the drawers you open every day: under the cooktop, beside the dishwasher, at the coffee station and in the pantry. A single deeply useful drawer pays back in use; a decorative upgrade in a dead corner does not.

Hinges and lift systems, priced

Hinges are usually the least dramatic hardware item until the kitchen is fitted. Then a door rubs, catches a pull, opens into another door or needs to clear a wall. The correct hinge resolves those conditions. The wrong hinge turns a good door front into a daily nuisance.

Published Australian retail examples show a regular full-overlay 110-degree Inserta or screw-on soft-close hinge at about $14 including GST, a half-overlay version around about $16, and a 155-degree full-overlay hinge from about $37. Multiply by the hinge count per door, then remember that price does not include the door itself or drilling and hanging it. That multiplication is why a wall of small doors can cost more in hardware than a cleaner layout with fewer, well-proportioned fronts.

Lift systems should be quoted by product and opening size. They are useful above a microwave recess, a tea station or a high-use appliance shelf. They need correct door weight, height and adjustment. Do not accept a generic “lift hardware allowance” when the door dimensions have not been settled. That is how budget gaps arrive after approval.

Inner dividers, organisers and bins

Internal organisation is where a good kitchen becomes easy to run. It is also a place where sales language gets loose. A drawer divider may be sensible in the top cutlery drawer and pointless in a junk drawer. A bin pull-out is valuable beside the preparation zone, not useful at the far end of the kitchen. Bottle storage and spice inserts work when the user has enough of those things to justify the lost flexible space.

I ask clients to list what sits on the bench because that list usually reveals the storage failure. If oils, knives, lunch boxes and charging cords all live in view, the answer is not necessarily more organisers. It may be one correctly sized drawer, a power point in an appliance cupboard or a deeper pantry shelf.

For laundry cabinet storage, I would rather see a robust pull-out hamper or two properly sized drawers than an expensive internal accessory that traps damp items. In built-in wardrobe hardware, hanging length, shoe access and the ability to see folded clothes matter more than matching the kitchen’s drawer finish.

What hardware costs as a share of a whole kitchen

The most honest way to allocate hardware is by use, not a percentage pulled from the air. The following example shows the relationship between the moving parts and the rest of a six-linear-metre kitchen. The figures are an illustrative budgeting structure, with market cabinetry ranges rather than SteepWood rates.

Six-linear-metre kitchen allowanceIndicative 2026 amount including GSTBasis
Laminate cabinetry package$4,800–$8,400Market range of $800–$1,400 per linear metre
Polyurethane cabinetry package$8,400–$13,200Market range of $1,400–$2,200 per linear metre
Two-pack cabinetry package$10,800–$18,000Market range of $1,800–$3,000 per linear metre
One LEGRABOX component allowanceFrom $233Published retail starting point
One standard soft-close hinge component allowanceFrom $14Published retail starting point

Do the arithmetic before treating those as a final kitchen price. Six metres times the low laminate range is $4,800; six metres times the high two-pack range is $18,000. Benchtops, appliances, demolition, trades and site conditions sit outside that simple comparison. Our full NSW kitchen cost guide is the better starting point if the whole room is being renovated.

Blum against Hettich, Grass and Titus

There is no universal winner. Blum, Hettich, Grass and Titus all make hardware families suited to different cabinetry and budgets. Availability, installer familiarity, the exact drawer system and the replacement path matter as much as the badge stamped on a runner.

Brand familyTypical positioningGood reason to specify itQuestion to ask
BlumPremium, broad drawer and lift ecosystemConsistent system across drawers, hinges and liftsIs the exact product named and scheduled?
HettichBroad residential and commercial hardware rangeAlternative premium or mid-premium systemCan parts be supplied locally later?
GrassDrawer and runner specialistRefined drawer action where specifiedWhich runner and load rating is being used?
TitusPractical hardware and damping solutionsCost-sensitive applications or specific fittingsDoes it suit the cabinet and frequency of use?

We do not make an official-dealer claim for any brand in this guide. We specify hardware to the project. If a quote says only “Blum or equivalent”, ask what equivalent means. Is it an equivalent opening action, load capacity, adjustment range, finish or warranty? Those are not interchangeable.

Where the premium is worth it, and where it is not

Premium hardware is worth it under the cooktop, in the main pantry, in a waste pull-out and in every drawer that carries plates, cookware or food each day. It is also worthwhile when the hardware must be accessed after the kitchen is complete. Replacing a runner inside a carefully finished pantry is more disruptive than choosing a suitable one from the outset.

It is less critical in a narrow overhead cupboard holding platters, a linen cupboard opened once a week, or a light-duty rental refresh where a durable standard hinge is enough. I would never push a whole-house premium package simply so a spec sheet looks impressive. Buy better access where it changes the way you live.

The same rule applies to finish. Dark drawer sides can look sharp under a timber veneer kitchen but add no storage. A functional internal drawer, bin pull-out or wide-angle hinge can solve an actual problem. Put the budget into the problem first.

Warranty and what happens in year seven

A hardware warranty is a product commitment, and its terms are product- and supplier-specific. Keep the hardware schedule, invoice and adjustment information. A door can need adjustment after normal settlement, and a failed component is easier to identify if we know which system was installed.

For residential building work, NSW statutory warranties run for six years for major defects and two years for other defects. That is a legal framework, not a reason to ignore manufacturer documents. In year seven, the practical question is whether the exact part can be identified, supplied and fitted without dismantling adjacent work. Named, common systems make that conversation easier.

SteepWood provides a 10-year structural warranty on all joinery. Product hardware terms remain separate, so they should be recorded with the handover information.

Costing the hardware in a real 6 lm kitchen

Take a six-linear-metre kitchen with eight hinged doors, six drawer fronts, one pull-out bin and one overhead lift. A sensible brief starts by assigning locations: deep drawers below the cooktop, a bin by the preparation run, standard hinges where shelves work, then a lift only where a door would clash.

At published retail starting points, six LEGRABOX kits would begin at $1,398 before fronts, fabrication and fitting; eight standard 110-degree hinges would begin at $112 before installation. That is simple arithmetic from the published drawer price and hinge price, not an installed quote. It demonstrates why the schedule matters: drawers affect the cabinetry build, while hinges usually sit within a door package.

Now change the layout to ten drawers, an internal drawer pair, two lifts and a premium bin system. The room has not grown, but the hardware and manufacturing allowance has. That is the honest reason a metre-rate comparison can fail. Read our guide to cabinetry cost per linear metre with the hardware schedule beside it.

What hardware choices cost across NSW projects

Hardware retail prices do not change because a project is in Newcastle or Sydney. Project cost does change with travel, access, parking, stairs, apartment booking rules, coordination and how early a decision is locked in. The location variable below is a briefing issue, not a price loading presented as a fixed fact.

NSW regionMedian weekly household incomeLikely specification conversation
Newcastle$1,760Balanced drawers in renovated detached homes and apartments
Central Coast$1,507Spend on working storage before decorative accessories
Lake Macquarie$1,623Practical deep drawers for family kitchens
Maitland$1,766New-build layouts benefit from early hardware planning
Northern Beaches$2,592Detailed internal organisation can be worth allowing
Inner West$2,340Tight kitchens reward efficient drawer planning
Woollahra$3,192Finish and concealed organisation often share the brief
Wollongongregional market dataRenovation access and existing-room constraints need measuring first

Income is not a fitout budget. It is simply a useful reminder that a suburb name should never substitute for a detailed storage brief. In Newcastle, Cooks Hill or Merewether projects can be as hardware-heavy as any Sydney apartment; a practical family kitchen in Charlestown may need more durable drawers than a small designer kitchen elsewhere.

A premium runner can also improve built-in wardrobe hardware and laundry cabinet storage, but only where the storage use justifies it.

FAQ

How much does Blum hardware add to a kitchen?

It commonly adds hundreds to several thousand dollars, depending on the drawer count, lift doors, pull-outs and internal organisers. A hinge-only kitchen has a very different hardware allowance from a kitchen with deep LEGRABOX drawers, an AVENTOS lift and integrated bins. Ask for the hardware schedule, not a vague premium-hardware line.

What does a LEGRABOX drawer cost in Australia?

A Blum LEGRABOX drawer kit starts at about $233 including GST at published Australian retail. That is a component starting point, not an installed drawer price: drawer fronts, cabinet machining, fitting, freight and configuration still need to be allowed for. Width, depth, internal drawer options and finish change the final allowance.

Is Blum worth the extra money?

Blum is worth the extra money where a drawer is deep, heavily used or difficult to replace later. It is less compelling for a seldom-used shallow cupboard or a basic rental refresh. The sensible decision is to spend on the working drawers and corners first, then choose the remaining fittings to suit the budget.

What is the warranty on Blum hardware?

Warranty terms depend on the exact Blum product and the supplier or installer providing it, so obtain the current written terms with your quote. Separately, NSW home-building statutory warranties run for six years for major defects and two years for other defects. Those legal rights are not a substitute for keeping product documents.

Can I get Blum in a flat-pack kitchen?

Yes, some flat-pack systems and retrofit suppliers offer Blum-compatible or genuine Blum components. Check drilling patterns, drawer-box dimensions and whether the carcass has been designed for that hardware before buying it. Retrofitting a hinge can be straightforward; converting a drawer system can require new parts and careful cabinet machining.

What is the difference between TANDEMBOX and LEGRABOX?

TANDEMBOX is a metal-sided drawer system intended for dependable everyday cabinetry, while LEGRABOX is the more refined, slimmer-sided system with a broader premium finish and organisation range. The right choice is not automatically the dearer one. The cabinet layout, load, visible side profile and budget should decide it.
